π΅ MONTH 1 β MUHARRAM
Status: The first and one of the four sacred months of the Islamic year.
Significance: Muharram is among the most sacred months in the Islamic calendar. It holds within it one of the most profound and heart-breaking events in Islamic history β the tragedy of Karbala, in which Imam Husayn ibn Ali (AS), the grandson of the Prophet ο·Ί, and his companions were martyred on the plains of Karbala on the 10th of Muharram (Ashura), in 61 AH.
This month is one of deep mourning, reflection, and renewal of commitment to the values of truth, justice, and sacrifice.
Recommended Acts:
- Participation in Majalis (mourning gatherings) commemorating Imam Husayn (AS)
- Recitation of Ziyarat Ashura β especially on the 10th of Muharram
- Fasting on the 9th and 10th of Muharram (Sunnah)
- Increased Salawat upon the Prophet ο·Ί and his Ahlul Bayt
- Charitable giving in honour of the martyrs of Karbala
- Avoidance of celebrations and festivities during the first ten days

π΅ MONTH 2 β SAFAR
Significance: Safar is a month associated with reflection and continued mourning in the Shia tradition. The 20th of Safar (Arba’een) marks the 40th day after the martyrdom of Imam Husayn (AS) β one of the largest annual pilgrimages in the world, where millions walk to Karbala in his remembrance.

Significance: Rabi al-Awwal is the month of the birth of the Prophet Muhammad ο·Ί (12th Rabi al-Awwal). It is a month of joy, gratitude, and renewed love for the greatest human being to walk this earth.

- 8th Rabi al-Awwal β Birth of Imam Hasan al-Askari (AS) (in some narrations)
- 12th Rabi al-Awwal β Birth of the Prophet Muhammad ο·Ί (widely observed)

Significance: Rajab is one of the four sacred months and a month of immense spiritual preparation. It is deeply revered in the Islamic tradition as a month of mercy, forgiveness, and barakah β the first of three sacred months leading to Ramadan.
Key Dates:
- 1st Rajab β Recommended du’a and fasting
- 13th Rajab β Birth of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (AS) inside the Ka’bah
- 27th Rajab β Mi’raj (Night Journey and Ascension of the Prophet ο·Ί)

- Du’a at the beginning of Rajab: “Allahumma barik lana fi Rajab wa Sha’ban wa ballighna Ramadan”

Significance: Sha’ban is the month of the Prophet ο·Ί β he fasted more in this month than any other outside Ramadan. It contains within it the blessed night of Laylat al-Bara’ah (15th Sha’ban), and the birth of Imam Husayn (AS) and Imam Mahdi (AJ).

- 3rd Sha’ban β Birth of Imam Husayn ibn Ali (AS)
- 4th Sha’ban β Birth of Hazrat Abbas ibn Ali (AS)
- 5th Sha’ban β Birth of Imam Ali ibn Husayn, Zain al-Abidin (AS)
- 15th Sha’ban β Birth of Imam Mahdi (AJ) & Laylat al-Bara’ah
Recommended Acts:
- Fasting β especially the 13th, 14th, and 15th (Ayyam al-Beed)
- Special amaal on the night of the 15th Sha’ban
- Du’a and worship throughout the night of 15th Sha’ban
- Celebration of the birth of Imam Husayn (AS) and Imam Mahdi (AJ)
- Increased Salawat throughout the entire month
- Preparing the heart and mind for Ramadan

π΅ MONTH 9 β RAMADAN
Significance: The most blessed month of the Islamic year. The month in which the Qur’an was revealed. The month of fasting, tarawih, Laylat al-Qadr, and immense spiritual elevation. Every good deed is multiplied. Every supplication is closer to being answered. Every moment is an opportunity for transformation.
Key Dates:
- 1st Ramadan β Beginning of the blessed month (fasting begins)
- 19th Ramadan β Night of attack on Imam Ali (AS) during prayer
- 21st Ramadan β Martyrdom of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (AS) β Night of mourning
- 23rd Ramadan β Laylat al-Qadr (most widely observed in Shia tradition)
- Last 10 nights β I’tikaf and intensive worship
- End of Ramadan β Eid al-Fitr
Recommended Acts:
- Fasting (obligatory for every able Muslim)
- Recitation and completion of the Qur’an

Key Dates:
- 1st Shawwal β Eid al-Fitr
Significance: The month of Eid and return β return to normal life, but carrying with it the spirit of Ramadan. It is recommended to fast 6 days of Shawwal as a continuation of the blessings of Ramadan.
Recommended Acts:
- Eid al-Fitr prayers and celebration with family and community
- Payment of Zakat al-Fitr (obligatory before Eid prayer)
- Fasting 6 days of Shawwal
- Visiting family, giving gifts, and maintaining the spirit of charity
- Continuing the habits of worship established in Ramadan

Significance: One of the four sacred months. A month of peace and preparation for Hajj.

- 11th Dhul Qa’dah β Birth of Imam Ali ibn Musa al-Ridha (AS)
- 29th Dhul Qa’dah β Martyrdom of Imam Muhammad al-Jawad (AS)

- Continued daily worship and dhikr
- Preparation for the sacred season of Dhul Hijjah

- Remembrance of Imam al-Ridha (AS) on the 11th

π΅ MONTH 12 β DHUL HIJJAH
Significance: The month of Hajj β the fifth pillar of Islam. The first ten days are among the most virtuous of the entire year. The 9th is the Day of Arafah, and the 10th is Eid al-Adha β the Eid of sacrifice, commemorating the ultimate test of Prophet Ibrahim (AS).
Key Dates:

- 10th Dhul Hijjah β Eid al-Adha

- Hajj (obligatory for those with the means β once in a lifetime)
- Fasting on the Day of Arafah (9th Dhul Hijjah) β for those not performing Hajj
- Qurbani / Udhiyah (sacrifice) on Eid al-Adha
- Increased dhikr in the first 10 days: Takbeer, Tahleel, Tahmeed
- Celebration of Eid al-Ghadir on the 18th
