Status: The first and one of the four sacred months of the Islamic year.

Significance: Muharram is among the most sacred months in the Islamic calendar. It holds within it one of the most profound and heart-breaking events in Islamic history β€” the tragedy of Karbala, in which Imam Husayn ibn Ali (AS), the grandson of the Prophet ο·Ί, and his companions were martyred on the plains of Karbala on the 10th of Muharram (Ashura), in 61 AH.

This month is one of deep mourning, reflection, and renewal of commitment to the values of truth, justice, and sacrifice.

  • Participation in Majalis (mourning gatherings) commemorating Imam Husayn (AS)
  • Recitation of Ziyarat Ashura β€” especially on the 10th of Muharram

Significance: Safar is a month associated with reflection and continued mourning in the Shia tradition. The 20th of Safar (Arba’een) marks the 40th day after the martyrdom of Imam Husayn (AS) β€” one of the largest annual pilgrimages in the world, where millions walk to Karbala in his remembrance.

Significance: Rabi al-Awwal is the month of the birth of the Prophet Muhammad ο·Ί (12th Rabi al-Awwal). It is a month of joy, gratitude, and renewed love for the greatest human being to walk this earth.

Significance: Sha’ban is the month of the Prophet ο·Ί β€” he fasted more in this month than any other outside Ramadan. It contains within it the blessed night of Laylat al-Bara’ah (15th Sha’ban), and the birth of Imam Husayn (AS) and Imam Mahdi (AJ).

Key Dates:

  • 3rd Sha’ban β€” Birth of Imam Husayn ibn Ali (AS)
  • 4th Sha’ban β€” Birth of Hazrat Abbas ibn Ali (AS)

Significance: The most blessed month of the Islamic year. The month in which the Qur’an was revealed. The month of fasting, tarawih, Laylat al-Qadr, and immense spiritual elevation. Every good deed is multiplied. Every supplication is closer to being answered. Every moment is an opportunity for transformation.

Key Dates:

  • 1st Ramadan β€” Beginning of the blessed month (fasting begins)
  • 19th Ramadan β€” Night of attack on Imam Ali (AS) during prayer
  • 21st Ramadan β€” Martyrdom of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (AS) β€” Night of mourning

  • Last 10 nights β€” I’tikaf and intensive worship
